This are has the Vaal River with many resorts around Vereeniging.

The historical village of Heidelberg with the Suikerbos mountains is worth a visit.

Vereeniging
In the late 1800s the Vaal River was crossed at Viljoensdrift, on the Free State side of the present Vereeniging. In 1878 coal was dicovered on the farm Leeuwkuil and a town developed around the mine on the northern bank of the Vaal River. The first stands were sold in 1892 and the railway track crossing the Vaal River was also completed that year.

It is one of the busiest industrial areas. The town is one of the most important industrial centres in South Africa and cables, chains, steel tubing, farm implements and many other products are manufactured here.

Coal reserves have been estimated at as much as 4 billion tons and substantial deposits of fire-clay, silica and building stone are also mined.

Heidelberg
Heidelberg traces it’s origins back to 1861, when Heinrich Ueckermann acquired part of the Farm Langlaagte, and established a general dealer at the crossing of the Durban and Potchefstroom road, with the main road between Cape Town and Pretoria.
In 1865 he appointed T.W. Fannin as surveyor for a town development, which named after his alma mater in Germany, and Heidelberg was established in 1866.
During the First War of Independence, Heidelberg served as the capital of the then Zuid Afrikaansche Republiek, from 1880 to 1883.
In 1885 the Witwatersrand gold reef was discovered in the Heidelberg District and the Office of the Mining Commissioner was established in the town.
Steeped in History and nestled in the beautiful Suikerbosrand Hills, with the Blesbokspruit flowing through it, and bordering on 13000 ha Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve, this picturesque town offers an unsurpassed, affordable country lifestyle.

Henley on Klip

Henley on Klip is situated next to the R59 between Johannesburg and Vereeniging. The village was founded in 1905, by Advocate Horace Kent. Born in 1855 in Henley on Thames, England, Kent came to South Africa in 1898. The area where Henley on Klip is located, reminded Kent of his hometown, in England, Henley on Thames. Kent, in conjunction with the Small Farms Company (SFC), bought the land from a Mr. Van Der Westhuizen, for a price of 5000 Pounds, and the land was divided into smallholdings from 1 to 80 acres.
