In Südafrika gibt es kein so gut strukturiertes öffentliches Verkehrsnetz wie man es beispielsweise in Europa vorfindet. Dies gilt ebenso für Großstädte wie Johannesburg oder Kapstadt. Tag für Tag fahren Millionen von Menschen im eigenen Auto, oder aber im hoffnungslos überbeladenem und oft verkehrsunsicheren Minibus-Taxi zur Arbeit.

Vereinzelt gibt es zwar Bus- und Bahnverbindungen, diese fahren jedoch nicht häufig genug, und das Netz ist nicht sehr dicht.

Wer auf der Reise durch das südliche Afrika unabhängig sein möchte, sollten sich deshalb einen Mietwagen nehmen. Diese sind - bei vorherigem Preisvergleich der verschiedenen Anbieter - recht günstig.

 
Automobilclub
Since 1932 the AA has been the trusted leader in 24-hour roadside assistance, travel and other mobility services. It is uniquely positioned to provide motoring and travel assistance and information to South Africans and to foreign visitors. 

The AA of SA also belongs to the Federation Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) – an organisation of more than 160 clubs in 120 countries representing more than 100 million auto club members across the globe.

Please ask your Automobile Club if the AA of South Africa has a cooperation agreement with your club. Do not forget your membership card.

In the rural areas there are long distances between petrol stations, so ensure, that you have enough fuel in the tank.

Some important regulations
  • You have to wear safety belts. . Bei Übertretungen muss mit strengen Strafen gerechnet werden.
  • 0,5 is the legal alcahol level
  • 60 km/h speed limit in towns
  • 100 km/h speed limit on rural roads
  • 120 km/h on freeways
