This area encomposes the western half of Gauteng with the industrial towns of Krugersdorp and Randfontein.

But there are also wide open spaces with Magaliesburg, a small village that lies at the heart of a beautiful region of mountains, valleys, rivers and indigenous woodland

Cradle of Mankind

The Cradle of Humankind Site comprises a strip of a dozen dolomitic limestone caves containing the fossillised remains of ancient forms of animals, plants and most importantly, hominids. The dolomite in which the caves formed, started out as coral reefs growing in a worm shallow sea about 2.3 billion years ago.
The Cradle of Humankind site lies mainly in the Gauteng province with a small extension into the neighboring North West Province, and covers 47 000 hectares of land mostly privately owned. Magaliesburg
Magaliesburg. This small village lies at the heart of a beautiful region of mountains, valleys, rivers and indigenous woodland - home to a variety of birds. But it is not all natural bushveld. Here you will also find a wealth of hospitality - country guest houses, hotels, lodges, stores, art and craft studios, working farms, horse and mountain bike trails and much more.

Hekpoort
Hekpoort is situated on the southern slopes of the Magaliesberg Mountain, a few minutes' drive from Hartebeespoort Dam. The area is accessible from the south via a pass ("hek" means gate in Afrikaans) through the Daspoortrand.

Krugersdorp

With a population of more than 350 000, Krugersdorp is the industrial hub of Western Gauteng and was founded in 1887 by MW Pretorius when gold was discovered on his farm, Paardekraal. The mining industry has formed an integral part in the development of the town, which has a rich cultural and historical background.

Krugersdorp was named after President Paul Kruger of the Transvaal. It played an important part in South African history and came into being because of two important events in the history of South Africa: the Transvaal War of Independence (1881) and the discovery of the Witwatersrand Goldfields (1886). These events had far-reaching political and economic consequences in South Africa's development.

By the time the town was founded, the existence of the gold reef along the Witwatersrand was well established and thousands seeking their fortunes pitched their tents and pegged their claims. In 1888, Krugersdorp was proclaimed a separate gold field.

Krugersdorp offers visitors all the benefits of a city, with a modern business centre and shopping malls alongside many smaller shops, schools, all the necessary amenities, as well as game reserves and a nearby bird sanctuary.

The nearby 1 400 hectare game reserve in dense bushveld with plenty of game is one of the town's major tourist attractions. Also in close proximity are various national monuments and the Cradle of Humankind with the Sterkfontein Caves and the Wonder Cave. Krugersdorp offers ultra-modern sport facilities including an ice rink of international standard, gyms and sport stadium

Carletonville

Carletonville is a gold-mining town in western Gauteng, South Africa. It
is one of the richest gold-producing areas in the world. At 3,749 m, Western
Deep Levels is one of the world's deepest mines.

Developed by various mining companies from 1937 onwards, the town – which
was named after the long-serving mining director of Consolidated Goldfields,
Guy Carleton Jones – was not officially incorporated until 1959.
