The Nylsvley Nature Reserve has one of the greatest concentrations of waterfowl and bushveld birds in South Africa. More than 400 species frequent the area.

Potgietersrus vicinity has several nature reserves. The Arend Dieperink Museum has a fine cultural-historical collection and the Makapan Caves are notable for their fossils. The Caves are being developed into an archaeological site.

The Thabazimbi district has a large concentration of private game reserves and is one of the fastest-growing ecotourism areas in the country. The Marekele National Park, with its Cape vulture colony, is a leader in the conservation of the black rhino outside of the Kruger National Park and the KwaZulu-Natal parks. Warmbaths is known for its hot springs, which attract more than a million visitors every year. There are a number of game reserves and leisure resorts in the area.

The Waterberg Range is rich in indigenous trees, streams, springs, wetlands and bird life. Cliffs known as 'the palace of the vultures' harbour a large breeding colony of Cape vultures. Nylstroom is the main town of this region.

Hammanskraal

Hammanskraal is about 40 km north of Pretoria And is one of the previously disadvantaged areas that suffered tremendously due to the marginalisation and neglect before South Africa's transition of democracy.
Come to Mandela's square and bear witness to Africa's testimony of freedom by seeing a man-sized statue of ex president Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela. Visit St. Peters, which was the sanctuary of many who fled from the oppressive hand of the apartheid system.

Alldays

Alldays and the villages of Vivo and Dendron serve an extensive area of private game and hunting farms. Prolific game - including the 'Big Five' - excellent accommodation and good hunting facilities attract many domestic and international trophy hunters.

Various interesting tours are available for the spouses and partners of hunters, including a visit to the archaeologically significant Mapungubwe Hill. Three taxidermists operate in the area. Citrus farming on the banks of the Limpopo River is also an important economic activity in the district.

The Blouberg ('blue mountain') range has a large surface of protected wall where climbers will find good solid rock. Most of the climbing spots are on private land but climbers can make arrangements through the Alldays Mountain Club.

Bela Bela
Bela Bela was renamed from Warmbaths a few years ago. Bela Bela is famous for it's hot springs and is situated in a malaria free area.

The hot springs in Bela Bela have atemperature of 48 degrees centigrade and contains dissolved salts like sodium chloride and calcium chloride. The biggest resort in the area is the Aventura Resort. It has a 21-meter-square inside pool, which leads to a cooler outside pool. Waterslides are available and is an ideal way to keep the children happy.
If you are more interested in relaxing and watching game or birds then the Bela Bela area also has accommodation in the form of bush lodges.

Modimolle
Thomas Baines, well-known explorer, naturalist and painter, tells a fascinating story of how the Nyl River received its name. Known to the locals as Mokgalakwena ('fierce crocodile'), the north-flowing river was mistakenly believed to be the Nile by a group of Voortrekkers known as the Jerusalemgangers ('Jerusalem Travellers'), who arrived here in 1886. They believed if they travelled long and far enough, they would find the Holy Land and a pyramid-shaped hill nearby strengthened their conviction that they had crossed Africa and reached Egypt.

Today the town of Nylstroom has been renamed Modimolle after the prominent hill close by which the locals regard as their holy mountain (Modimolle meaning ‘god has devoured’). The town is the commercial centre of the Waterberg Region and is famous for its export grapes and soft fruits such as peaches and watermelons.
The route from Bela-Bela to Modimolle along the 101 route offers both an alternative to the toll road and exceptional scenery.

Thabazimbi is named after the exceptionally lucrative iron ore that is found in the vicinity and means 'mountain of iron' in Tswana.
