Hout Bay from Chapman's Peak Drive Copyright: Ronald Lewis
Hout Bay lies in a long valley surrounded by the steep slopes of Chapman's Peak and the almost vertical Sentinel. Inland from the 1500 meter white sand beach Hout Bay village still retains its village atmosphere. There is a lively fishing port on the south side of the bay. From here the launches for the seal islands leave every half hour, weather permitting. In the World of Birds over 3 000 birds and small animals of 400 different species can be viewed in walk-through aviaries - experience nature up close! In the harbour is an interesting fishing museum.
The Chapman's Peak Drive is one of the most spectacular scenic drives. The 600 meter high road was cleaved out of the rock-face and is about 10 km long. There are great views over Chapman's Bay and back to the Sentinel and Hout Bay. Sometimes you can see Wales far down in the bay on many occasions. The drive is a toll road and the toll has been fixed at 23 Rand.

Llandudno seems to be a completely different world to Cape Town (and
Africa) although it is only 17 km away. It is a small very exclusive
place with many of the Jet set living here. It has a superb beach but
no shops, restaurants or pubs. Another two km over the hill will take
you to Hout Bay. Many famous sportsman and international actors have
made this beautiful spot there second home. So there is a good chance
of spotting a celebrity on the beach. A scenic 20 minute walk will take
you to Sandy Bay. This is an unspoilt beach with unspoilt people
tanning and having a swim in the nude. (The water was to cold for me)
