The Gydo Pass
The Breede River Valley is separated from the winelands by the majestic Do Toit Kloof Mountains.

The Valley floor is are intensively cultivated with vineyards and orchards. Dutch settlers displaced the local Khoisan and had settled the valleys by the beginning of the 18th century. The area was very isolated, however, until passes were built through the mountains in the late 19th century. The northern parts of the valley around Tulbagh and Ceres have strong winter rainfalls, to the west of Worcester however the countryside becomes very dry.

Since the opening of the four km Huguenot Toll Tunnel (N2) places like Robertson and Montagu can be reached from Cape Town within 2 to 3 hours.

Tip: Take the Du Toitskloof Pass for the fantastic views.

Tulbagh

Tulbagh is the most complete example of an 18th and 19th century village in South Africa. There is a whole street of Cape Dutch architecture that was restored after a devastating earthquake in 1969.

Tulbagh is framed by the Witzenberg and Winterhoek mountains and is very popular with hikers. The Oude Kerk Volksmuseum is a complex made up of four buildings. The church (1743) still has the original furniture and in an annex Victorian furniture and costumes are displayed.

Tip: Visit to the volksmuseum.

Ceres

Ceres is referred to as the Switzerland of Africa. The town is located on the western side of the Skurweberg range. The Middelburg and Gydo passes leading into the valley should not be missed.

Coming from Citrusdal a dust road will take you up the Cedarberg, the really good views are on the Ceres side when you come into a valley completely walled in by raw, rock hills with rich mineral colouring. In stark contrast the , the floor of the valley is usually emerald green. Ceres was once a famous centre for making horse-drawn vehicles. Consequently, the Togryers Museum (Transport Rider Museum) has an interesting collection of Wagons and carriages.

Tip: Spectacular views from the passes.

Worcester
"Kleinplasie"
Farm Museum

Worcester is surrounded by majestic mountains and fertile valleys of the country's biggest wine producing area. Taste and buy the award -winning wines of the Worcester Winelands - a route of 23 co-operative cellars and 4 private estates.

KWV Brandy cellars in Worcester are the biggest of its kind in the world. The outstanding Karoo National Botanic Garden shows semi-desert vegetation with exotic plants like the "Halfmens" and the "Kokkerboom".

The Kleinplasie Farm Museum is excellent, one of the best in South Africa. This is a live museum, meaning there are people wandering around in period clothes and rolling tobacco, making soap, operating a smithy, milling wheat and spinning wool. The farm is fascinating and can absorb a couple of hours.

Tip: Spend a few hours in the "Kleinplasie" Farm Museum.

Bonnievale is situated on the banks of the Breede River. Surrounded by the Langeberg Mountain Range in the north-east, and the Riviersonderend mountains in the south-west, it is one of the most beautifully situated towns in the Western Cape. The town is approximately 180km from Cape Town and 100km from the southernmost tip of Africa at Cape Agulhas.
Bonnievale is known as The Valley of Cheese and Wine for a good reason. Here are 4 Co-operative Wine Cellars, 4 Estates and 2 private wine producers in the area. The oldest wine cellar in the Bonnievale area is Nordale Wine Cellar. The Robertson Wine Route, which includes all the wine cellars in the Bonnievale area, has in recent years won great acclaim in South Africa and around the world, for the production of outstanding white and red wines.

McGregor

The village of McGregor has been described as "the best preserved and most complete example of mid-nineteenth century townscape in the Cape Province".
Its mild climate makes it one of the most delightful places to spend time during the southern hemisphere's "cold" months. Mainly dry, and generally balmy, McGregor's winters are charming. And in summer, the constant sunshine makes McGregor a great place to visit for a taste of African heat - in a civilised environment.
That's McGregor, with its  traditional, whitewashed, thatched cottages, its quiet streets, mountains, birdlife, wine, charming and balmy winters, and hot, hot summers.
