Rolbos Guest House
Calvinia is not just another emerging Karoo town – stop and see for yourself! Make a pit stop at the Calvinia Museum and Tourist Office if you want to know how the town’s folk live. Some travelers use the town as a halfway / overnight stop along the R27 route. City dwellers longing for the good old days spend a day or two hiking, sight-seeing or bird watching. The tourism season peaks during August and September when it is flower time! The Hantam mountain dominates the town of Calvinia, formerly known as Hantam. The first Dutch Reformed minister, ds N J Hofmeyr, suggested changing the name in honour of the Reformer John Calvin. Hantam is the Khoi word for “the mountain where the red bulbs” grow. The town was established in December 1847

Die Dorphuis
Die Dorphuis **** Erwin and Alta Coetzee beautifully restored Die Dorphuis, circa 1860, to reflect its Victorian heritage. The Dorphuis literally transports you hundred years into the past. Besides the fantastically restored treasures found here, you can feel the past – a past that lives and breathes, because of the authentic antique treasures that are still in daily use. This treasure chest has among others three luxury rooms, six outside rooms (four of these are original "nagmaal" rooms), as well as two modern suites. Stepping inside this National Monument, you'll find every wall in every room a piece of art. Period pieces were carefully selected and placed to create a feeling of nostalgia. All the rooms in the Dorphuis-complex have yellow wood furniture. Even though all the walls are decorated with old family portraits of serious-looking Calvinianers, each room still has its own unique features to reminisce over.
